This year, it will specifically ask people what they thought of the reimagined Canada Day celebrations. Those at the event Friday also included Camilo Nirvaz, who came to Canada from Colombia with his wife and dog two months ago. Nirvaz said he was excited to mark his first Canada Day by celebrating his new country, and learning about its past and about Indigenous cultures. The day's activities included lessons on how to create and offer tobacco ties into a fire, which Nathan Ertel and Shawn Thomas, from the St. Boniface Street Links outreach program, helped with. Thomas, who is from Peguis First Nation, said he's been learning more recently about Canada's residential school system and hopes others spend some time this July 1 doing the same. There will be food trucks, local vendors, youth entrepreneurs, prizes and more.

BBQ, horse shoes, kids and adults scramble, bouncers, cotton candy, live band, airbrush and henna tattoos, photo booth and more. A day filled with fun activities, ending with a live band on the bandstand and fireworks to cap off the night.

Canada Day Kirkbridge Park cultural performances and fun activities for kids are planned. Refreshments will be served. A powwow, Indigenous drumming, craft stations and performances by theatre groups and musicians are also scheduled throughout the day.

The full schedule of events can be found here. Assiniboia Downs is hosting a festival complete with fireworks, food trucks and live music, with Juno Award-winning artist Hawksley Workman headlining. However, Peguis First Nation, who leases the racetrack and grandstand land to Assiniboia Downs, issued a statement earlier this week saying it is not associated with the event and will not be celebrating Canada Day this year, in light of Canada's reckoning with the legacy of the residential school system and other significant challenges facing First Nations people.

Canada Day events at Assiniboine Park begin at 11 a. A full list activities can be found here. The decades-old Canada Day tradition of a street party in Osborne Village won't be returning this year. Vital cemeteries will remain open from am to pm; however, the Administration Office at Brookside Cemetery will be closed on Friday, July 1.
